About

I earned a Master of Arts in art history from The University of Iowa and a Master of Arts with Certificate of Advanced Study from Conservation of Historic and Artistic Works Program, Cooperstown Graduate Programs, Cooperstown, New York. I was conservator and instructor at Intermuseum Laboratory, Oberlin, Ohio, then established the first conservation facility at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond in 1977 followed by the conservation studio in the new North Carolina Museum of Art in 1981. In that year, I was elected a Fellow of the American Institute for Conservation. In 1993, I opened a private studio for the conservation of paintings and painted surfaces in Raleigh which continues today in Asheville. I have completed more than 90 Collections Assessments for small museums and historic sites in every southeastern State. The Conservation Assessment Program is funded by the Institute of Museum and Library Services, a federal agency. I volunteered following Hurricane Katrina in Louisiana in 2005, the earthquake in Haiti for the Smithsonian Institution in 2010, and Super Storm Sandy for New York City artists, 2012-13. I have served a President of the Southeast Regional Conservation Association, Chair of the Emergency Committee of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC), and President of the North Carolina Preservation Consortium. I continue as a volunteer for the FAIC National Heritage Responders. From 2012 -2015, I completed the Certificate in Appraisal Studies in Fine and Decorative Arts from New York University, School of Professional Studies, with the intent to specialize in damage and loss appraisals.
